Yes, there is. SETI@home is a prime example. Using BOINC (that's what they call their software) not only does Berkely.edu use the spare time on your computer in their search for extra terrestrial intelligence (with data from the Aricebo radio telescope array), there are several other types of programs from which to choose.

You are awarded points for every unit completed and of course, the info is posted so you can check your standings. You can work in a team or individually. There's also a screen saver function showing what your computer's doing while it makes the computations.

Once you join the community, the software will log in, grab a file to work on and then send it back to Berkely. After which, it'll get another and then another, on and on. You have the ability to set up a lot of parameters on how much free memory you want to assign to the software, how much CPU usage, etc, and it will run in the background unless you want to use the screensaver portion.

I've personally been a member for years and find that it causes no problems with my computer or any other software. For the most part, you'll never know it's there unless you feel the need to chack up on it once and awhile, just to make sure it's working.

I'd highly recommend the program for anyone who feels a need to contribute to the scientific community. Go check it out. bebo
