From the information contained in those scriptures, Krishna was a little boy when he danced upon the (5) heads of a hooded serpent. That was done to protect the serpent from an Eagle like predator and also to protect the villagers and cows from the serpent's poison. The water from the lake in which the serpent hid from the predator became poisonous. The footprints upon the serpent's head were done as a mark of protection and as a result it was free to leave its refuge within the lake.
