يمكن تحديد جنس المولود عادة في الأسبوع رقم 20 أي حوالي 5 أشهر لعمر الجنين، ولكن في الوقت الحاضر ومع وجود التقنية العالية للموجات فوق الصوتية يمكن تحديد جنس الجنين في أقل من 12 أسبوعاً ولكن كلما تأخر الفحص كانت النتيجة أدق.
