Yes !! There are bushings at the lever pivot and the shift collar. These should be checked and replaced at the dealer or a competent repair shop.
on my 1999 ford mercury villager its on top of transmission under the van
the unit is under the steering column.actually its stuck on the steering column and its a black plug
On a Mercury Villager ( being a front wheel drive vehicle ) The transaxle ( transmission ) is located in the engine compartment to the drivers side of the engine

OBDII plugs are under the dash to the right of the steering column.
The transmission fluid dipstick is just to the left of and below the battery and fuse box.
In the dashboard behind the small grill to the right of the steering column.
In the 1997 Mercury Villager, the Transmission fluid dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine just in front of and below the master cylinder/brake fluid check. The 97 Villager has a bulbous knob on top with no indication that it is the Transmission fluid.
It's part of the range switch on the transmission.
