Check your Transmission Fluid and for fluid all over the road you were driving on. Seems you lost fluid, have a busted bottom pan or other. Maybe the old burnt fluid clogged the trans. Don't even try to drive it. Replace the fluid and filter and clean out the cover. If that works do it again in 100 miles of driving.
i checked the tranny fluid and it is still full, slightly darker in color then when you would just put it in but still full, could this possibly be caused by a sensor?
Do you have a check engine light? Did you or a friend remove the trans pan and check the filter for being clogged up. What is the milage on this vehicle - not that it matters if the trans fliud and filter was not changed often. Be prepared for a trans repair. Shop around for a reasonable repair price.
The car might have an automatic cut off to either disengage the transmission or cut off the engine. Otherwise you will rip apart the transmission.

the forward gear clutch pack is worn out. the only solution is to get the transmission rebult.
If it has an automatic transmission, it probably needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

It could be the transmission, it could be some parts under the vehicle that rub only when travelling forward.
Sounds like you have a busted linkage somewhere
