Yes it is easy. Just take off your door panel. There are about 4 screws around the outside, one screw behind the handle from the inside, and one screw under a tab in the door cup. Then pop out the bottom of your door and push up slightly. Don't forget to disconnect your power windows and locks before you try and yank your door off. Then your speakers are now exposed and you can replace them. You have to get the exact size speaker as before unless you want to buy a speaker adapter plate to bolt on. Also keep in mind the stock amplifier for this car has a low pass filter for the doors, so they won't get any treble (all the treble goes via a high pass filter to the dash tweeters.) Pick a new speaker with good mids and lows.

I Have a 1997 Eclipse GS. There are two small speakers on the front dash near the windsheild. These speakers are 4 inches. The ones in the door are 5 1/4 because I actually took it apart and measured the speakers. The ones in the back or side panel are 6 1/2.

Remove the covers to your 1997 radio speakers. Remove the radio speaker retaining screws. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the radio speakers. Reverse the process to install your new radio speakers.
