Point mutations will only affect a aingle amino acid in a protein chain, which could or could not affect the actual protein. If a point mutation occured and coded for a stop codon, that would be an example of one way it could affect the protein chain. However, since there are 20 different amino acids but 64 different ways to form codon combinations, 4 nucleotides and 3 slots in a codon 4^3=64, some different codons code for the same end amino acid.

Frameshifts, however, affect every single codon after the shift occurs. This will occurs when an extra nucleotide is added, or one is removed from the mRNA which is responsible for directing which amino acids go where on a protein chain. Look how the meaning of the sentence changes with the frame shift.

|___| represent codons

letters represent nucleotides

the | cat | ate | the | rat

^--- Correct Sequence

the | aca | tat | eth | era | t

^--- Sequence with an extra 'a' before 'cat'

Notice how the frames of all the words after cat are changed. This can occur with a missing or extra nucleotide.

. by changing the number of mRNA bases that make up the codons

2. by preventing the ribosome from binding to the mRNA

3. by changing the sequence in amino acids brought to the ribosome

4. by creating codons with no complimentary anti-codons

A frameshift mutation may cause a change in the codon sequence, specifically the 3-base sequence which is responsible for coding a specific amino acid. A different protein, a non-functional one, or no protein at all may be the result of this change.

A point mutation is a change in a single base pair in DNA. A change in a single nitrogenous base can change the entire structure of a protein because a change in a single amino acid can affect the shape of the protein.

A frameshift mutation is a mutation in which a single base is added or deleted from DNA. A single base is lost from a DNA strand which causes this new sequence with the deleted base, to be transcribed into mRNA. Then, the mRNA is out of position by one base. As a result, every codonafter the deleted base is different. This mutation causes nearly every amino acid in the protein after the deletion to be changed.

It would change the whole code

Example:

Original Sentence- THE BIG DOG RAN AND HIT HIS ARM

Mutated Sentence- THE BAI GDO GRA NAN DHI THI SAR M

The sentence doesnt make sense because of the added A in BIG.

A frame shift mutation affects the polypeptide chain because it causes the ribosome to read each codon wrong. If the ribosome starts reading the DNA one nucleotide to the right or left of the place where it is supposed to, the whole polypeptide chain will be altered. The codons read by the ribosome will be different, so they code for a different set of amino acids. The polypeptide chain is made up of amino acids.

What is a non polar mutation?

a mutation in a gene that does not affect the downstream genes in an operon. ie. a polar mutation is one that DOES affect the transcription or translation of genes in the same operon downstream of your gene of interest.

What mutation stops translation of the mRNA?

The type of mutation that stops the translation of a protein is a nonsense mutation. This occurs when a base substitution (point mutation) results in a STOP codon and thus stops translation of the sequence into a protein.

mutation in exons are less likely to affect phenotype then mutation in introns because mutaion in exons are silent mutation

A mutation does not affect an organism trait for a reason. It is neutral which depends on the environment.
