Infants have around 80ml per kilogram blood volume (although the range can be from 50-100ml'kg). This steadily drops to the adult values of 50-70ml/kg.

A 6 month old infant weighing approx 6 kg would have about 480mls of blood.

10mls taken out for blood samples would represent around 2% of the total blood volume

Repeated blood sampling in infants may result in loss of significant blood volume and so the reason why paediatric sampling bottles are used which require much smaller volumes than adults
