A small describtion about Domain Name Service? |
[Edit] |
Every computer connected to the internet in the world has an IP address consisting of 4 sets ( octets ) of 3 numbers ( highest being 255 )
When you go to any website, for example, www.my-example-website.com, you are connecting to another computers IP address. If you knew the IP, you could type it in, but how many people are going to remember 171.42.69.118? Thats where Domain Name Services ( DNS ) come in. The take a name that you like, and forward everybody who types that name ( DNS ) to the IP address of your choice.
So for example, you build a website on your own. You host it on your home computer. Your IP address is 111.111.111.111 and you have bought the DNS name www.MYSITE.com and given them your IP.
Now I go to my house, and type www.MYSITE.COM in, the DNS provider looks it up, connects me to your IP, I get connected to your computer, and bingo. I'm on your website.
So, for the most part, DNS names are nothing more than shortcuts.
