What kind of degrees can you get in medicine?

Traditional medicine in the United States and Canada recognizes two degrees. The first is the more commonly known M.D which is Medical Doctor. The other less well known is the D.O. which is Doctor of Osteopathy. The M.D. practices allopathic or traditional medicine and surgery while the D.O. practices osteopathic medicine which is a combination of traditional medicine, surgery, and manipulative medicine (sort of a combination of both allopathic medicine and chiropractic medicine). The osteopath is trained to understand that correct alignment of the skeleton is just as important to a body's correct functioning as being free from disease is. Both M.D.s and D.O.s receive comparable training and can be found practicing together. There are two other medical degrees available which stray from traditional medicine. The first is the D.C which is Doctor of Chiropractic which deals just with spinal alignment and the second is ND which is Naturopathic Doctor which deals with several subsets of what is considered alternate medicine. The D.C. is recognized in the United states and Canada and the ND is recognized in limited states and territories. Now, so that other subsets of medically related doctors do not feel left out, there are also dentists who specialize only in the teeth and gums. They may get either a D.M.D. degree or a D.D.S. And then there are doctors who specialize only in the eye. They will get a O.D. degree.

If you suspect you have a pinched nerve in your neck could your family doctor help?

General practitioners and/or family doctors are amazing when it comes to emergency medicine, and could save your life in an emergency, but, when it comes to neuromusculoskeletal conditions they are not your best option. A family doctor really only has a couple options in this situation: #1 - prescribe pain killers to keep you comfortable until the problem goes away (hopefully). #2 - refer you to a neuromusculoskeletal specialist. You could save yourself the hassle of being bounced around between doctors and just head straight to a neuromusculoskeletal specialist. The best two that I know of are doctors of chiropractic and physiotherapists. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to diagnose and treat these exact conditions (back and neck pain), and this would be my first choice.
