Generally, it's safe to take immediately. I know that when I had mine, I was prescribed pain meds and birth control pills at the same time.

Usually you are advised to start taking birthcontrol pills, or any other method of birthcontrol (the shot, pills, vaginal ring) immediately, or the Sunday following the abortion. But it's safe to start birthcontrol as soon as the procedure is over. Just refrain from sex, or using tampons for the first 2 weeks during the healing process.
