Mustafa Kemal became the First President of Turkey from 1923-1938 (when he died) and began to modernize the country in new and innovative ways, making the country more Westernized. Many Turks consider these improvements to have directly led to Turkish success as a country where most of the Islamic World is significantly poorer or sustained only by oil riches. Mustafa Kemal made the following reforms to modernize Turkey while he was a president:

  • separated the laws of Islam from the laws of the nation
  • replaced the old Muslim calender with the Gregorian calender
  • abolished religious courts and created a new legal system based on European law as opposed to the previous system based on the Islamic law code
  • granted women the right to vote in all elections and to hold public office
  • launched government-funded programs to industrialize Turkey and to spur the economic growth
  • attempted to modernize Turkey by banning the Fez which was of Greek origin
  • marriage was considered civil and not religious and polygamy was abolished

He is considered the father of modern Turkey. He was a military officer in World War One when the Ottoman Empire fought on Germany's side. After they lost, the monarchy collapsed in a civil war, which Ataturk's Republican government won in 1923. He set up a one-party state that introduced sweeping reforms and westernization.

These included:

  • Founding Turkey as a secular (i.e. religiously neutral) republic and replacement of Sharia Law with secular law, although it would not be until eight years after his death that multi-party elections were held.
  • Abolishing nobility titles and religious offices that had existed under the Ottomans, with varying degrees of success.
  • Abolishing types clothing such as the veil, turban and the fez and promoting western-style dress. The Ottoman Empire had used clothing as a way of showing what a person's class, gender and religion was.
  • Giving women rights, including the right to vote, that were radical even by European standards, let alone within the Islamic world.
  • Centralising and reforming the education system to make the country literate, including introducing four years of compulsory education. At the time only 11% of the country were literate. By 1960 it has risen to 40%, and today stands at 87%.
  • Most famously, he converted the alphabet from Arabic to Latin, arguing that it was easier to learn and better suited to the Turkish language. However, the most important reason was to give the country a more European outlook.
  • Government attempting to stimulate and modernise the economy by building factories, farms and railways.
