Depends...

If numbness caused of anaesthetic, then will go away from between 3-12 hours depending on type of agent used. If numbness or paraesthesia caused by damage to inferior alveolar nerve or lingual nerve, numb or altered sensation may be permanent.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted 3 days ago and my bottom lip and gums on the left side is still numb. When does that go away? It's driving me crazy!!

--- Whoa, three days is way too long.. Sounds like you have some potential nerve damage.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out 5 days ago. I am a 19 y/o girl. My numbness lasted for about 24hrs. It all depends on the individual person. I was put to sleep so that may be a factor. For me, it lasted for about 24 hours and then the pain came on like a shooting rocket. I am having mild pain 5 days later.

But overall it depends on the person but most are at the least 6hrs and at the most 48 hrs but the steady average is 24hrs.

I had my Wisdom teeth pulled when I was 15, I'm 27 now. Most of the numbness went away after the swelling went down, though I still have a dime sized area on my jaw line that never regained sensation. I have spoken with my dentist about it a few time, most recently was earlier this year, and he said while my case is rare, it can happen.

If there is nerve damage, it can last forever. If it's just numbing medication, then about 1-2 hours.

Why do people get their wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth get pulled out to prevent pain and discomfort. If the wisdom teeth don't have enough room in the back of your mouth and they grow in they will push your existing teeth out of the way and cause them to be mashed together. They can also grow in sideways, this is known as being 'impacted'. Sores can grow on your gums and become infected, leading to major problems down the road.

Do you need to have your wisdom teeth removed if there is enough space in your mouth for them to come in?

Before I had braces on, it was suggested that I have my wisdom teeth removed, so I did. It could however depend on the individuals teeth, mine were quite crowded or as they call it impacted. You'll be glad you got braces, good for you. Very often, if wisdom teeth have no room to erupt, it is recommended to extract them following an orthodontic treatment.
