all objects do have energy it is all a question of which type you have potential; energy and kinetic energy potential energy is like stored energy and the object is known to have the potential to do work wher as kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to the motion of the object

The object can do work on another object, it can move forward in to endless time and space, it can move a distance until friction takes over, it can change forms of energy (Like Kinetic Energy to Potential Energy), there are many possibilities..... Normally, in the real world if the object is a machine that produces energy, it usually increases the rate at which the energy is used, or the energy is used more efficiently. If an object is being pushed, the energy stored in the object (Potential Energy, or PE for short) converts into moving energy (Kinetic Energy, or KE for short) and that same object moves until frictional forces take over. There are MANY more uses, but these are just the few uses that you would observe more frequently in daily life.

Potential energy is the energy of position. An object at a higher position has more potential energy. The idea is that it has the potential to do work - the "potential energy" can be converted to other kinds of energy. In fact, this could be said about most other kinds of energy as well (that you can convert them to other types of energy). I assume the name is given for historical reasons.
