Spud played some with Willie, but hated the road. He started playing in San Antonio with Tony Rozance, Curly Williams , and Spud on guitar. He started his own music store Dellview Music Center on Vance Jackson and then sold it to Don Pack who still runs it to this day. Spud moved to somewhere around Troup, and would come out on occasion to play with Willie or others. I saw him on an Austin City limits with Willie and a bunch of other song writers in the early 90's. He told me had never had a real job in his whole life, just picking. But boy what a picker. He started out as a very young road musician and played all over in the 40's but by the 50's he had had enough of the road, that's why he settled in SA. Spud was the King.

I remember Spud Goodall, Curly Williams and Tony Rozance very well. I was a little kid but my mom, Rosita Fernandez, had a program called "On the Alamo" and had Spud and Curly as their background music. Spud was incredible. I remember Spud playing the guitar with his feet!! I also remember sitting next to him awed by the music that came out of that fantastic artist and his instrument. He told me something that I have always remembered. He said "Always listen to the musician that plays softly. Someone who plays loud music can hide his mistakes with noise. The soft player has no place to hide" I play the guitar (very badly) but insist on playing softly. I also remember him going to Chet Atkins to ask for more training and coming back to tell me that Chet had sent him away telling Spud that there was nothing he could teach him. He was that good. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
