In California, all 2 stroke outboard motors that do not meet ISO 9000 emission standards of at least 3 stars are outlawed. So far, only the new line of outboards from Evinrude, called the E-TEC series, meet the standard. It is likely that this type of law will expand to other states, and also that other manufacturers will develop new models that will be in compliance with the standard. Evinrude has accomplished this feat with a computer controlled, direct fuel injected engine that does not mix the lubricating oil with the gas. The motor is very clean burning due to precise fuel injection, and doesn't smoke because the lubricating oil does not enter the combustion chambers.

Are 4 stroke outboard motor engines for boats going to be outlawed?

4 stroke outboard motor engines are unlikely to be outlawed anytime in the near future. 2 stroke engines probably will be outlawed. 2 stroke engines pollute the atmosphere. 4 stroke engines are standard gasoline engines like are in automobiles. They will probably be required to get better pollution control equipment, which will be easy. They will probably be required to be made more efficient, which will not be quite as easy. They will probably not be outlawed.

How to Choose an Outboard Motor?

Instead of buying a new boat, the best alternative may be simply purchasing a new motor. For those that have fishing boats and other working craft, he or she probably has an outboard motor, which are popular on these particular vessels. Outboard motors can be found in a number of places although it is best to purchase one from an authorized dealer or someone that is trustworthy. The reason for this is that simply outboard motors require special knowledge of engine parts to repair and refurbish. If the proper care and time is not taken for the repair, the motor could fail at the most inopportune time.Four Stroke EnginesThe most popular outboard engines of the present are the quiet and reliable four-stroke engines. These engines have recently made their debut over the last ten years because of their ease of use. Four-stroke engines do not use oil as two-stroke engines do, and they also use less gas than two-stroke engines. Also, the four-stroke engine is much quieter than the noisy two-stroke engine, which makes it far less intrusive for those long trips to the Gulf Stream. The only down-side to four-stroke engines are that they are more expensive than two-stroke engines. Four-stroke engines are also considered safer to purchase from classified advertisements or other places. Four-stroke engines do not require specialized repair personnel for general maintenance and small repairs. A 150 horsepower engine can be found for prices starting at $5000.Two Stroke EnginesTwo-stroke engines are the most traditionally used outboard motor on the market. They incorporate the use of oil in their gas tanks and are said to be able to attain more overall torque than four-stroke engines. Two stroke engines are great engines and can be found re-built for relatively cheap. For instance, $500 will get one a two-stroke outboard motor up to fifty horsepower. The best place to look for two-stroke outdoor motors are at authorized used boat dealers or licensed small engine repair shops. Two-stroke engines are different from other engines and takes one with specialized knowledge to make even the most general repairs.

Do all newly made boats have an outboard motor?

The short answer is no. Boats are made with outboard, inboard-outboard, a hybrid using an inboard engine driving a stern mounted shaft that looks like the lower end of an outboard. Others use inboard engines, typically larger cruiser and specialty ski boats. Personal watercraft use a inboard engine powering a water jet pump. This jet drive system is also used in some boats. Most smaller boats are powered by outboards. New large outboards up to 400HP permit larger boats some over 30 ft long to be outboard powered. Most mid-size boats from 18-30 feet are powered by inboard-outboard systems to take advantage of larger automotive engines.

Can a 2 stroke engine use fuel injection technology?

Yes, I some 2 stroke engines for boats have it and KTM is developing one for dirtbikes.

Do boat have engines?

Yes the majority of boats have engines. Ranging from Outboards, Inboard/Outboard, and full Inboard engines. Some sailboats do not have engines but most have a small kicker engine for getting into port where they cannot sail, or also for when there is no wind.

Can you turn an in board boat into an out board boat?

It is often done with elderly old small boats with unreliable engines. Mounts are available to fit a range of cheap outboard engines on the stern. We did it, giving up on the unreliable inboard engine and using a modern outboard instead
