As in any society, you will have some individuals who are centered on image, beauty, power, etc. It is not particular to just the American society. The majority are more reality based, and care about those issues that affect a way of life that is beneficial to all people. What the media promotes about Americans is really not reality in its most perfect and purest form.

It can be strongly argued that Americans place too much emphasis on physical appearance. Both men and women are portrayed unrealistically in the media, but ironically, most people become overweight due to their low self esteem, stemming from being unable to achieve this standard of beauty.
