I don't know the composition of Hefty bags, but I trust my nose most times to detect odors from noxious substances. Most garbage bags are made w/ petroleum products and have "funny" smells. Small amounts of the substances in a garbage bag might contaminate any food placed inside the bag. Most manufactures state on their packaging whether their product is safe and or recommended for food storage.
Sorry, my answer is really an opinion, as I don't know for sure. And of course noxious odors aside, a Heffty bag may be safe?

I am guessing you want a large inexpensive bag, which the Heffty is. Contact the company to get a real answer.

Uline, a supply catalog, sells in bulk, and carries all sorts of bags. If you want cheap (who doesn't) maybe someone you know in food handling can find an economical source?
