Are Jehovah's Witnesses considered a Christian denomination by anyone else but themselves?

[Edit]

Answer

Most Christian denominations, including Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Churches do not regard Jehovah's Witnesses as Christians.

Answer

No, we don't think so. We believe it is a cult. So far as I can tell, as well as many others, Jehovah's Witnesses assume to know most everything there is to know about God and His triumphant return, etc. No one can know that, because the Bible says so... Not that they would know because they have changed a lot of the Bible to suit what they want to be able to do without sinning. The problem with that theory is, the Bible says in Revelation that no one can change the Bible because we are human and the Bible comes direct from God

Another answer

No, because:

1 There is a charismatic leader.

2 They have changed the word of God, the Bible. So when they support their arguments they use their bible.

3 They control lives, money and assets of their followers.

4 To recruit new members of their "church" they pose as Christians, as Jesus believers.

Not really an answer - a warning. Just because JWs can quote scripture (their scripture of course from an altered Bible) don't be fooled. They are very good at quoting scripture and unless you are well versed in the Bible they will try to tie you in knots by quoting verse after verse - and always out of context. I don't think they are evil - just misguided. Don't forget, when Jesus was in the wilderness, and tempted by Satan, even the devil himself could quote scripture. So beware of this cult!

Before answering the question, it should be a bit more specific. The term "Christian" means something very different to different people. An orthodox Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, whatever church is very different from the modern non-denominational churches, or so called "splinter churches" (churches that have broken away but haven't actually formed a separate doctrine). Even though their doctrines and beliefs are vastly different from each other, orthodox Christian churches generally agree that the JW church is a cult i.e. not true Christians. However, many of the splinter churches (many of whom fall under the term 'cult' themselves) don't.

Personally, the range that the term 'Christian' covers in today's society is truly terrifying.

Answer

Note: The following text gives no indications that anybody external to themselves considers Jehovah's Witnesses to be Christian denomination. All the quotes show is that Jehovah's Witnesses is considered a sect with aggressive missionary tactics and they imitate organizational structure (nothing about the belief!) of the early Christian Church. Answer is edited for readability. Irrelevant text is removed.

Others seem to indicate we resemble the early Christians:

In Presbyterian Life of January 20, 1951 Elton Trueblood suggested that in their ministry, Jehovah's Witnesses follow the pattern of the early Christians.

The religious publication Interpretation, in a chapter entitled "The Bible and Modern Religions, Jehovah's Witnesses," observes the following:

"In their organization and witnessing work, they [Jehovah's Witnesses] come as close as any group to approximating the primitive Christian community.

And what has been the reception given to these Kingdom witnesses? A noted constitutional lawyer, Leo Pfeffer, surveyed the scene and wrote about Jehovah's witnesses in his volume Church, State and Freedom: "Their aggressive missionary tactics are reminiscent of those employed by the early Christians, and the reception accorded them by the nonbelievers is likewise reminiscent of that visited on the early Christians."

It is especially good to give thought to what a Christian organization really is doing in view of these strong words: Yet, some may object: 'Look at all the crimes that have been committed in the name of Christ-the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the wars that have seen millions who claim to be Christian kill one another on opposing battle lines.' But the truth is, these people belief their claim to be followers of Jesus. His teachings and way of life condemn their actions.
