LCD vs. Plasma There has been a lot of misinformation about plasma TVs. People used to think that you had to recharge the gas over a certain period of time or that they burned out. The life span on a plasma or LCD on average is 60,000 hours. At about 8 hours a day that's over 21 years. Most of the major manufacturers list this spec on their websites. As far as what's better, it depends on the application. Plasma generally has better black levels, less motion artifacts and a sharper picture. But they also have a more reflective screen which can be bad in a room with large windows.

LCD's do better with computers. They are not prone to burn-in, so when you have an image on the screen that does not move (like a blue apple in the top left corner, or a start button in the bottom left) it won't damage the screen.

Plasma screens require more energy than LCD screens, and they produce a noticeable amount of heat.

I think that most people prefer LCDs (liquid crystal display) over plasma (depending on manufacturer) because of their lower energy consumption and plasma's are susceptible to image burn-in, which basically means that your colors will eventually lose sharpness and get darker (also creating a "shadow" image when the power is off). This is caused when the same image is displayed for long periods of time.

Plasma TVs generally do better in darker settings than LCD's because they are brighter; however, LED-backlit LCD televisions have been developed to reduce this distinction. Plasma tv's are also made with glass which causes more glare; although, some manufacturers have developed filters to reduce glare.

LCD can lose pixels in its display, either becoming permanently 'stuck' or lit, or unlit. I have this problem with my computer monitor (just a white dot in my screen) but I hardly ever notice it esp. considering I got it on discount.

Lastly, use and abuse are important in considering which is better for you. Plasma's or LED-backlit LCD's are better for movies, esp. when you're watching them in the dark. LCD's are better for video-gaming because the static-images (images that don't move) cause burn-ins on plasma TVs.

Depends on your use and your opinions. LCD images are more easily "washed out" by light sources in the room but have less glare (no glass screen). LCD's have a much longer life span that Plasma screens but can suffer "pixel burst" where you get a dead spot on the screen. LCD screens do not burn in images that are stationary on the screen such as video game icons or stock tickers bars.

For many people LCD's make more sense, but performance wise Plasmas can give you about the same picture quality.

Well, Plasma TV's give of more heat, use more energy and are heavier and in a bright room tend to have more of a glare issue for some. However Plasma TV's have come a long way as far as the burn in problem of that of the earlier models did in the past. Plasma TV's now that is less of a issue. And the Black and motion is smoother then a LCD/LED TV can produce. LCD TV's use less energy, have longer use life and no burn in and lighter in weight. And can be used in any room. But for gaming can experience some picture issues. But that is usually not the case if you have at least a 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 2.7-5ms response rate 720p-1080P and a 240 GHZ. TV
