Lazarus in the Gospel of Luke and Lazarus in the Gospel of John are clearly not the same person, but there is good reason to believe that the author of John's Gospel developed his story of Lazarus from the story in Luke's Gospel.

Luke and John are the only gospels that mention sisters called Mary and Martha, and the only gospels that mention Lazarus. The involvement in both Gospels, of sisters called Mary and Martha is, by itself, either an improbable coincidence or verification that one author drew inspiration from the other. The additional coincidences of name, death and hypothetical or actual resurrection of Lazarus is compelling evidence that the concept was taken by John from Luke's Gospel.

Scholars now recognise that John's Gospel was in fact inspired by Luke's Gospel, but with some material taken direct from Mark's Gospel. In his story of Lazarus, Luke characteristically wanted a story where the poor man triumphed over the rich man in heaven. John, characteristically, wanted to demonstrate the divine power of Jesus.

Yes. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were disciples who wrote about their time with Jesus. Matthew may have remembered something John did not, so one may find different accounts in each book. That is why there are different stories in each book. All four books are about the same period of time. They just remember different instances.

Was the Lazarus who died poor the same as the one Jesus raised?

A:No, there are two persons called Lazarus in the New Testament, however the story of the second Lazarus (in John's gospel) does seem to have been inspired by the first. The first Lazarus is in a parable in Luke's Gospel, where Jesus tells a parable of Lazarus dying and going down to hell where he meets a rich man being punished for his sins. The rich man asks for Lazarus to be raised from the dead so that he can warn his friends of the fate that awaits them. This Lazarus was not intended to be understood as a real person. Here, Martha and Mary are poor people from an unnamed village, sisters and friends of Jesus. In John's Gospel, Martha and Mary are also sisters and friends of Jesus, but apparently wealthy. These sisters have a brother called Lazarus whom Jesus really does raise from the dead. The close parallels are a reminder that John's Gospel is actually based on Luke's Gospel, so that John's one story of Martha, Mary and Lazarus was inspired by Luke's two different stories. Although the account appears intended to be read literally, the literary parallels tell us Lazarus was not a real person either.

How did Lasarus die the second death?

A:The similarity of the stories of Lazarus, Martha and Mary in Luke's Gospel and John's Gospel can lead the casual reader to believe that the same Lazarus died and was resurrected twice. The confusion can be cleared up by understanding that John's Gospel was actually inspired by Luke's Gospel. It can then be understood that the author of John took the story from Luke and reworked it, producing a completely different but parallel story about Lazarus. In Luke's Gospel, Martha and Mary are sisters and friends of Jesus, but are not related to Lazarus. Jesus tells a parable of Lazarus dying and going down to hell where he meets a rich man being punished for his sins. The rich man asks for Lazarus to be raised from the dead so that he can warn his friends of the fate that awaits them. This Lazarus was not intended to be understood as a real person.John's Gospel says that Lazarus was the brother of Jesus' very close friends, Martha and Mary. His exact cause of death was unimportant, because Jesus was to raise Lazarus from the dead after several days. Having been raised from the dead, Lazarus was still mortal and would die again one day. The gospel does not say anything about the final death of Lazarus, although it does say that the priests talked about having Lazarus killed (John 12:10).For theological reasons, the author of John wanted to make the resurrection of Lazarus the final trigger for the arrest of Jesus. He therefore moved the Cleansing of the Temple out of the way, to the beginning of his story, almost immediately after Jesus met John the Baptist. In John 12:19, the turning point is identified: "The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.")

What are the similarities of Luke and John stories of the life of Jesus?

There are some similarities, but also many differences between Luke and John in the life of Jesus. In some cases, the timing of similar events has changed. Both have the mission of Jesus start with John the Baptist, although scholars have noted that John does not actually say that Jesus allowed himself to be baptised. Both have Jesus drive the moneychangers out of the Temple, but Luke says this happened at the end of the mission of Jesus, as a prelude to his arrest and crucifixion, while John says this happened at the very beginning.Luke and John are the only gospels that mention sisters called Mary and Martha, and the only gospels that mention Lazarus. Luke contains a brief story of Jesus visiting the sisters, while Lazarus is in a parable that mentions his resurrection hypothetically (Luke 16:20-21). John wrote an important episode, in which Jesus visited the sisters, Mary and Martha, and resurrected their dead brother, Lazarus (John 11:43-44). The coincidences of name, death and hypothetical or actual resurrection of Lazarus is strong evidence that the concept was taken by John from Luke's Gospel.John narrated an episode in which the risen Jesus appeared to the fishermen beside the Sea of Tiberias and, casting their nets on the other side, they caught so many fish that they could not bring them all in (John 21:1-14). This is really a repetition of the miracle catch of fish described by Luke as an event which took place at the same spot during Jesus' life (Luke 5:1-11).Only Luke and John have the apostle Peter run to Jesus' tomb and go in and find it empty. However, the author of John wished to downplay the role of Peter, so had "the disciple whom Jesus loved" run with him and be the first to look in and see the tomb empty, although he did not go inside.Luke and John have the risen Jesus appear to the disciples at a meal on the day of the resurrection. For Luke, Jesus appeared to the eleven remaining disciples and then took them out to Bethany, where he was taken bodily up to heaven on the evening of his resurrection. For John, Jesus appeared to ten of the remaining disciples, with Thomas absent. He appeared to all eleven, eight days later.

Has Jesus' tomb been found?

A:The tomb of Lazarus has never been found and is never likely to be found. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable of Lazarus dying and going down to hell where he meets a rich man being punished for his sins. The rich man asks for Lazarus to be raised from the dead so that he can warn his friends of the fate that awaits them. This Lazarus was not intended to be understood as a real person and therefore there is no tomb..Martha and Mary appear in Luke's Gospel as sisters and as friends of Jesus but are not related to Lazarus, however in John's Gospel Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary. He died and was already interred in a tomb, but was miraculously resurrected by Jesus after four days. The similarity of the stories of Lazarus, Martha and Mary in Luke's Gospel and John's Gospel can lead the casual reader to believe that the two gospels talk of the same Lazarus. The confusion can be cleared up by understanding that John's Gospel was actually inspired by Luke's Gospel. It can then be understood that the author of John took the story from Luke and reworked it, producing a completely different but parallel story about Lazarus. Since Lazarus was a literary creation of John's Gospel, his tomb will never be found.
