This is highly desirable because when Aluminum Oxide fragments it creates new sharp edges. This self-renewing property allows aluminum Oxide to last longer than most other sandpapers.Garnet is a natural abrasive that is still commonly used in woodworking. It is not friable like Aluminum Oxide and tends to wear out a lot faster. This is not necessarily a detriment since garnet will produce a smoother surface than aluminum oxide of the same grit number. It will however cut slower than its stronger cousin will. Garnet is also an excellent choice for a final sanding paper. It has the tendency to burnish, or seal off a wood's grain. This allows pigmented stains to penetrate woods such as birch, pine, or lauan, more evenly.Silicon Carbide is harder than both Aluminum Oxide and Garnet. Although a geologist could give an extremely detailed answer, I usually think of soil particles as coming in 3 sizes: Sand (the largest marble shaped particles) Silt (much smaller irregularly, jagged shaped particles) and clay (extremely small, flat particles shaped like playing cards). The ideal growing medium for turf is humus. This is a loose, friable, living soil system which is high in organic matter. By adding compost (which by definition is material that has been decomposed by bacteria/fungi) to any of the 3 soil types listed above you are increasing the "fertility" or the ability of a plant to get adequate moisture and nutrients. Some fungi digest rock (also known as minerals), other fungi digest organic matter (commonly thought of as any plant or animal tissue). This process of digestion by microorganisms puts all of the raw materials that plants need to sustain themselves into a form that is "available". By "available", I mean that the compounds are bound to the soil particles in such a way that they don't just wash away at the first rain (water soluable vs. water insoluable). Another meaning of the word "available", when thinking of nutrients, is that an element (potasium or calcium for instance), is in a form that the plant can readily use. I visualize this concept in this way: I'm in a desert, longing for a drink of water. I come upon a giant ice cube the size of a house. Because i don't have any tools to break off a chunk of ice that will fit into my mouth, I can't consume any water and I continue to go thirsty. The nutrients in compost are "available" to plants (they are in a form that is readily/easily consumed) and consequently add fertility to any soil profile.

The downside to this situation is it causes damage to the mateiral that did not exist before. Unless you are planning on disturbing a specific suspect material or a mateiral is in deteriorated condition it is not recommended that you attempt to identify whether or not it is asbestos containing. Asbestos containing mateirals do not pose a health threat unless they are disturbed and rendered friable thus releasing asbestos fibers into the air. The previous answer did suggest air sampling which is snake oil science based on the nature of asbestos and the acceptible analytical methodologies for testing air quality for asbestos fibers.
Is exposed insulation in a basement dangerous?
What kind? Friable Asbestos? Yes. Non-friable Asbestos? Not so much, but still not great. Vermiculite? It may or may not contain asbestos. Fiberglass? Mice love it, and it can make dust, and it only really insulates if it's completely encapsulated by wall, stopping air movement. Foam? It's combustible, and current thinking is that it should be covered by a 15 minute smoke barrier. (If there's a fire, you have 15 minutes to get out before it produces toxic smoke.) There are expensive paints that can do this, or you can cover it with sheetrock.
Can asbestos rub off on clothes?
I will elaborate here, as I'm not sure how to add anymore detail to my question. Recently I lent on a piece of material on a wall. My clothes were then covered in a white chalky dusty substance. I've heard the building I was in used to contain asbestos, and the property managers were prosecuted for mishandling the substance. Was is just plaster that rubbed off on me? Or is it possible for asbestos to become disturbed that easily? I've heard it's only dangerous when sawed into and fibres released into the air, but I've not heard of it rubbing off by being lent against before. Thanks for any answers!
