ABSOLUTLY!! Very expensive. Its more money for an oil change, more money for parts, more money for labor, they constantly have recalls and there is always something wrong with them.
Absolutely not. Well, usually not any more than most cars. I have had one thing go wrong with my 2003 GTI that I took care of myself. I've had the car for 3 years. My 2002 Jetta 1.8T has had 3 issues all covered by warranty. We've had that car for 5 years.
The only recall we've had to go in for was a brake light switch that had the possibility of going bad.
Oil change costs the same as any other, and you're only required by the factory to get it changed every 5 thousand miles. Labor is only more expensive if you take it to the dealership (and that goes for any manufacturer).

No, most were liquid cooled. The (original) Beetle and possibly the Type 2 (not sure on the latter) were the air-cooled Volkswagens.
Used Volkswagens can be bought all around the world, as Volkswagens are very popular and highly ranked cars everywhere. They are most oftentimes found in major or large cities with car or auto parks. The tools on Autotrader can provide further assistance.
