Original Answer....Although there is some controversy regarding LSD flashbacks, they are likely to be real (but quite uncommon).

Acid Flashbacks are very real but not everyone gets them and there seems to be no correlation between the amount of acid taken and the amount of flashbacks and how many years they last.

I am telling you that first hand I have experienced far more acid flashbacks than the number of hits I have taken, and its not fun. The vast majority occurred during elevated body temperature, I.E. moment of physical exertion or a hot shower or steam room. Its been damn near 15 years since I last took acid and I had the worst flashback I ever had this morning. That's why I thought Id jump on the internet and give my thoughts.

It doesn't feel like acid itself, but something very similar. It passes over you like an uncontrollable wave for about 30 seconds or so. The sensation is very hard to explain, but from my perspective it was like my life flashed before my eyes, but a lot more weird. Every flashback after that felt almost familiar to me, but no less creepy. It will mess up your day, almost always.

Afterwards I am always left in a cloudy haze. The very first flashback I thought I was having a stroke, thank god it wasn't.

I have heard it said that acid stores in your fat cells and/or spinal fluid, and while I believe that this may have some validity, I believe that acid does something else that's a little more permanent, since I have surely used up any stored LSD in my system years ago. I am no neurophysicist but I believe it sets up a neurological pattern(s) in the brain that can be triggered inadvertently and cause a flashback to occur. Its how it 'feels' to me, the thought patterns that go through my head during a flashback seem familiar but not my own and not under my control.

Acid is something that should only be taken once or twice in a lifetime. Do not abuse it or you WILL pay the consequences, trust me.

"Flashbacks" are a reported psychological phenomenon in which an individual experiences an episode of some of LSD's subjective effects long after the drug has worn off, usually in the days after typical doses.

In some rarer cases, flashbacks have lasted longer, but are generally short-lived and mild compared to the actual LSD "trip". Flashbacks can incorporate both positive and negative aspects of LSD trips, and are typically elicited by triggers such as alcohol or cannabis use, stress, or sleepiness.

Flashbacks have proven difficult to study and are no longer officially recognized as a psychiatric syndrome. However, colloquial usage of the term persists and usually refers to any drug-free experience reminiscent of psychedelic drug effects, with the typical connotation that the episodes are of short duration.

What drugs cause flashbacks?

Almost all drugs can cause flashbacks depending on the tolerance of the user, but Lysergic Acid (LSD) is the most commonly known flashback induced drug, some flashbacks occurring up to 3 years after the last dosage, but continued use prior to that period would be needed to induce such a flashback. The occasional use is unlikely to cause a further 'trip' later in life.
