Vermin means animals that are destructive and/or a nuisance to humans. Bats tend not to get particularly noticed by humans at all, so that label don't fit too well. But I guess they could be considered vermin if they got into your attic.

They're definitely not rodents, that's rats, rabbits etc - a completely different set of animals.

Bats are not "winged rodents" or any other kind of rodent. The bats are of the mamalian order Chiroptera, while rodents are of the mamalian order Rodentia. And, in so doing, he could gain an overview of the "tree of life" and what it is we do when we classify a life form and assign it to a branch of the tree.
