It all depends if you just want to take pictures or if you want to take videos. Both are great of course, but what is it that you enjoy doing. Or there are some cameras that take pictures as well as videos.
Best camcorder, is one with a MiniDV tape drive, Canon ZR series are good camcorders, better that Flash, Hard drive or any other format video quality wise. Get one with a Mic Jack, as you will find it is a very needed thing.
No, there are much less expensive camera's that do the same thing. You do not need to invest that amount of money to record simple videos. But then again I'm a frugal person so I wouldn't spend the extra money on something that frivolous.

A digital camera is better, because on 99.99% of digital cameras also have excellent cam-corders whereas a cam-corder is usually just a cam-corder and is only occasionly a camera aswell! Plus when a cam-corder is a camera too, it is not a very good camera. So I would definitely get a digital camera (as an added bonus, cameras come in pretty much whatever color you like!)
