Both of these materials offer superior strenght to weight ratios, as well as added protection from electrical hazards, when compared with steel. The American Society for Testing and Materials [ASTM] is the source for information regarding protective footwear and makes no differentiation between steel or composite. Their concern is with impact [the I number] and the crush [the C number] protection.

∙ 11y agoComposite materials tend to be less strong as steel. However shoes are most of the time made according to certain safety standards. So a shoe made according to the European Norm EN 20345 must be able to withstand an impact of 200J regardless of the material it is made of. So for basic protection it doesn't matter which material the toe cap is made of as long as it meets the standards specified by the company/industry.
