In Europe the name elk refers to the same animal as the North American animal called a moose. Both of these are common names for the scientific name 'Alces alces'. In North America, however, the common names elk and moose are two different species. Moose, as explained above, are 'Alces alces', while elk are 'Cervus canadensis'. Another name for 'Cervus canadensis' is wapiti. Both 'Alces alces' and 'Cervus canadensis' belong to the 'cervidae' or deer family.

no horses are in the family equidae and the moose is in the family cervidae. horses and deer (to which the moose is the largest deer species) are in two completely different families in two completely different orders. the horse family (equidae) is in the order perissodactyla and the deer family is in the order artiodactyla. Heck, rhinos and tapirs are closer relatives to the horse than moose and other deer are, because rhinos and tapirs are in the perissodatyla order along with the horse. I can see where you draw the comparison between moose and horses (because their bodies are quite similar looking), but comparing horses to moose are like comparing humans to wolves (genetically speaking).

Members of the Cervidae family include: White-tail deer, Black-tail deer, Moose, Caribou, and Elk are all in the same family. You can go to wikipedia and search all of those names to find out more information about them.

I don't know if this is a generalization or not, but last Saturday, I saw a moose cross the road and go into a pasture. There were two horses in the pasture and they were freaking out. They ran to the extreme opposite corner of the pature away from the moose. They were watching the moose very carefully and they were clearly agitated by it.
