Ah the famous argument. This debate has two sides, audio/videophiles and marketing teams on one hand, and practically everyone else on the other. I worked in consumer electronics for 5 years using everything from Radio Shack wires to Monster Cable Sigma with a price tag that would singe your eyebrows. Was there a difference? Yes. Was it comparable to the price difference? No. Did the average consumer spot the differences without being shown? Nope. Did a mid-level cable and high end cable perform comparably? YEP!
So, more expensive cables with all kinds of shielding and gold this and silver that work quite well, but so do cables costing half or a quarter as much. As long as you have a decent cable in the mid range of any respected brand (Monster Cable should be called Marketing Cable but the products do work) you should be good.
