California Penal Code(PC) 653K defines legal and illegal knives. Illegals ones are switchblades, ballisongs(butterfly knives), dirks and daggers. As mentionedabove, unless you are active duty military or LEO, it is illegal to buy, sell, mail those knives.
PC 12020 defines what is legal to carry with you.
However, switchblades and ballisongs under 2.5" length are not illegal.
Assisted opening knives are not switchblades and therefore are not illegal in terms of CA knife carry law, however local towns and cities may have more restrictive laws compared to CA and can ban them.
