The lines of different intensities that you are refering to is "Bar code" which basically represents the EAN or Electronic Account No. of a particular product which is unique. The EAN is now being replaced by GTIN or Global Trade Identification No.
SKU or Stock Keeping Unit is particular identification no. given to products that a company wants to keep for either consumption in its manufacturing unit or it may send the same to its retail stores. The defination of SKU changes from company to company and from manufacturing company to retailer or traders as it is broadly defined by the user company.
