The Muppets are a group of puppet characters created by Jim Henson. Individually, a Muppet is one of the puppets made by Jim Henson or his company's workshop. Although the term is often used erroneously to refer to any puppet that resembles the distinctive style of The Muppet Show the term is both an informal name and legal trademark linked to the characters created by Henson. Television shows featuring Muppets have been Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock and Bear in the Big Blue House.

The puppet characters of Farscape, The Storyteller, Mother Goose Stories, The Hoobs, Construction Site and Dinosaurs, as well as from the films Labyrinth, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Buddy, The Country Bears and The Dark Crystal, are not considered Muppets, as they were made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, rather than by Henson's Muppet Workshop

Jim Henson was the main person in providing the various muppets that appeared in the programme. His company made them and he provided the various puppeteers that operated them. He operated a number of them himself, including Kermit and Ernie. He died in 1990, but his company continued to work with Sesame Street after that.

Jim Henson didn't create Sesame Street, but he was involved with the start of it.

Sesame Street was started with grants from an assortment of companies, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Ford Foundation, and the Carnegie Institute.

The Carnegie Institute hired Joan Ganz Cooney to study how television could be used to aid in education of preschool children. Joan is the one who came up with the idea of Sesame Street.

He may have had a hand in creating the physical puppet since that had been around since the 1970s, but Jim Henson had no hand in creating Elmo in 1985.
