Less than for PC because mac is still only 5% of computer market, but they do exist and can do just as much harm as windows variants

who ever wrote that is an idiot. There are a handful, at most, of what could be called viruses for the Mac OS X platform. However, they are simply not as effective, and never can be, as viruses for Windows XP. This is down to the way the system is written. You have distinct layers of the OS - the user only uses the top layer of it all and has to enter passwords specifically to access anything that could be damaged.

So, due to this protection, a user would have to purposefully allow the virus onto their machine.

Secondly, the apple market is much smaller than that held by Microsoft with its Windows platform, so there is less reason to create a virus in the first place - why create something to attack Mac's when the same effort could be expended making one that attacks many more machines.

One caveat here though is that complacency is a bad idea. We should not be sitting there trusting anything and everything we come across on the net - as this may well lead to virus problems.

What is the percentage of getting a virus of any kind on an Apple computer or laptop?

There are no viruses that affect Mac OS X so the chances of getting a virus is zero. It is possible, although highly unlikely, that an unwary user could download and install some malware but the number of Mac users who have ever done that is probably less than one per cent.

How do you enable cookies on Firefox using mac os x leopard... When I click on Tools there is no options menu. I have only had a problem trying to load ESPN Insider - possible virus?

Nevermind, I apparently forgot that on the Mac, things are under Firefox-Preferences. I still can't get ESPN Insider's "Rumor Central" to load without getting an error message about cookies. Maybe there's a temporary problem with ESPN's site. I have VirusBarrier X5 and just ran a scan - no problems. Also, I'm not even aware if there are any active viruses out there that can affect Mac OS X Leopard.

Do you need the same kind of computer as my son in order to Skype?

What are the similarities between computer viruses and pathological viruses?

Many things! For one thing, a pathological virus can take over the body, such as computer viruses can. There are also multiple versions of viruses and pathological viruses. That and they can be blocked out. While computers can use antivirus programs, we have immune systems. ~SwaggaCat
