Goodness, yes. A few tomato hornworms cans reduce a boisterous mature tomato plant to a green spray of sticks in a few days. They'll even eat the fruits. They're bad news for gardeners. You will know you have them by finding areas where foliage is gone leaving only stems. Just beneath this you'll find robust dark green turds that resemble miniature horse apples. They hide camouflaged perfectly on the bottoms of the leaves. I have good eyes for them, but I have a friend who said that if you spray water from a little spray bottle they'll wiggle and show themselves. BT is an organic way to rid yourself of them.

No, they are scary looking to repel predators but harmless to everything except plants.
