Depends on what 1.8 liter motor you have. VW has made many 1.8 liter motors from the 1975 8 valve to the new"er" 1.8 T many of those are interference, many are not.

As a unwavering absolute rule change ALL VW timing belts 20K before the "spec", yes even the updated belts. They are easy to perform and not worth the hassle of the unexpected tow. Then you are at the mercy of your mechanics time schedule.
Remember you must always replace the tensioner without out an exception when the timing belt is replaced.
