Of course show by example but you have to be honest and upfront with them, age appropriately of course, about the real world. Point out all the positives that are in people and humanity from all over the world. The TV and newspapers, any media make everything so grim, I do not like even watching it or reading it, its depressing. Start small with the responsibility, cleaning their rooms, helping around the house, having respect for themselves and each other, sharing, show them compassion. When you do some spring cleaning give to the homeless and point it out that there are people that are less fortunate that sometimes we must help, even in the littlest of ways. When they become old enough to understand, take them to the shelters in your area to volunteer. Scouting is a good way, too because the bylines that the founder based scouting on teaches respect and responsibility. Community cleanups and the like also shows them what they can do to pitch in. Teach them about nature and show them how beautiful even the smallest of bugs and flowers are. Grow a garden with them. Have them make things for the elders in your church/synagoge and that can instill pride and a good feeling of giving. When they grow out of their clothes go with them to donate. Show them the beauty in your world and the micro world they begin in and then their macro world will fall into place. It is a tough job to be a parent but it is very rewarding, good luck.
If parents love their children ...
If parents love their children, they will not be nationalistic, they will not identify themselves with any country; for the worship of the State brings on war, which kills or maims their sons. If parents love their children, they will discover what is right relationship to property; for the possessive instinct has given property an enormous and false significance which is destroying the world. If parents love their children, they will not belong to any organized religion; for dogma and belief divide people into conflicting groups, creating antagonism between man and man. If parents love their children, they will do away with envy and strife, and will set about altering fundamentally the structure of present-day society.
As long as we want our children to be powerful, to have bigger and better positions, to become more and more successful, there is no love in our hearts; for the worship of success encourages conflict and misery. To love one's children is to be in complete communion with them; it is to see that they have the kind of education that will help them to be sensitive, intelligent and integrated.
