Answer
Sometimes it is difficult to meet people in a very small town. Often the residents have formed their own circle of friends, many of whom have probably grown up together. A good way to meet people with interests similar to your own is to volunteer with a non-profit or community organization like the Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Learn to Read or as a driver for the local Meals on Wheels Program. Members of these organizations are usually friendly and outgoing especially to other members who have the good of the community at heart. Another plus is that many volunteers are business people in the community who can often provide you with an avenue for introductions. So, you get the benefits of meeting some nice people and can experience the joys of helping others...
If "helping others" isn't really your thing, there are other options available. One good piece of advice is simply to keep your eyes and your ears open, no matter where you are. Be friendly to everyone you meet, and don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with an attractive person you meet at the grocery store, bus stop, library, or even at the gas station. Also, be aware that sometimes that little old man or woman you're talking to at the deli might introduce you to someone closer to your age. Older women in particular are prone to "match making," and very creative at arranging meet-ups for people they like. Of course, there's always the local bar or pub if all else fails.
You might also try Facebook or some other social networking service. Try to get to know people online from your area; at least some of them may be interested in meeting you in person later on.
