Answer

They usually will start laying eggs at about 20 weeks.depending on whether they are feee roaming or in a coop. If they are fee roaming they can start laying as late as 23 weeks.

It's true that they do not need a rooster to lay eggs, but they do need a rooster for the eggs to hatch.

Production RIR's are relatively early maturing chickens and will usually start to produce eggs at about 16 to 18 weeks old. As soon as the Rhodies are ready to come off the chick grower feed they can be started on a layer MASH or pellet to be sure the egg making equipment is in top condition. You can expect good egg production up and beyond age two from these hardy birds. Herritage RIRs on the other hand, are slow maturing and will start to lay at about 28 weeks of age for the rest of their life, although the amount of eggs will decline as they age.

Rhodies are generally good layers. Well cared for Rhode Island reds can lay up to 300 eggs per year for the first two years. Egg production depends on the lighting conditions, nutrition and general health.

Point of lay is generally defined as 16 weeks old, but most modern hybrids will come into lay at around 18-19 weeks. The first eggs will be small, and production will not be as high as later in the laying cycle

Traditional breeds will generally come into lay later, and the time of year i.e. daylight hours and temperature will affect when lay will start.

Pullets approaching laying during the dark cold days of winter may delay their first eggs until January (in England) when the days begin to lengthen.

I have one that's nearly 5 years old, and she's going strong and still laying.

On average, a Rhode Island Red will produce eggs consistently into her 3rd year but her rate of lay will be reduced drastically from that point. Many egg production farms will cull birds at about 26/28 months old since birds have reached peak production by then.

At least a year or two. Then it would be considered an "adult".

Rhode Island roosters (that's the correct spelling) reach sexual maturity at about six months of age, the same as the roosters of any other breed of chicken.
