All kids are different i talked at 10months but my son didn't start talking alot until he was almost 2 I think as long as they can do other normal stuff (sitting crawling walking etc.) they are fine some kids just don't talk

∙ 12y agoSpeaking is a complex combination of hearing, seeing (mouth movements), and mimicking sounds. Mimicking comes from being talked to, read to, or sung to through pregnancy and very early months of life. Children who aren't talked to, read to, or sung to often have delayed speech.
A baby usually first says some version of Maa-Maa (sometimes Daaa-daa is the first word). The mmmm (M) sound is one of the easiest to make because the baby only needs to press his or her lips together and create a "humming" type sound that is felt in the throat. (Try it!)
But, more complex words take longer to hear, break down the sounds, and try to mimic. For example, the animal "beaver". The B-eee sound is easy but to follow it with "-ver" can be tricky for children under 3 yrs. As well, words that involve placing the tongue at the back of the top front teeth is harder than words like Mama. A word beginning with "th" is an example. Words like "th-ings" require muscle control, facial/oral control, as well as coordination of respiration and sound. To give a different example, most babies will ask for a "baa" or some variation of "bottle" (if they nurse with a bottle). Bottle sounds like baaa-tool -- and putting the second part in is more complicated for young babies. Many children under 2 years to 6 or 7 years may have a strong lisp in pronouncing certain words, simply because some sounds require more muscle control and / or require certain placements of the tongue against the teeth.
Examples of different sounds, muscles, and tongue placement:
George - puckered mouth, as though giving a kiss, teeth apart, no touching of the lips
this - tongue at back of front teeth, but teeth are apart so the tongue may touch both upper and lower front teeth
doggy - opened mouth on "da" sound, but the gee sound stretches the mouth at the sides, tongue at back of bottom teeth
baby - the "ba" sound here is higher than the "ma" in "mama". "Ba" flattens the tongue, so it touches the front lower teeth. The "bee" is like the "gee" in doggy. One a 1-2 yr old masters the "-ggy" ending or "ie" ending or "y" endings in a few words, they can transfer that sound to dozens of words with similar endings.

∙ 14y agoChildren can understand words much earlier than they can speak them. Every child is different and there are children who can speak 50 words by 12 months and some who start speaking by 2. A child should start saying the first words by 6 months. By 24 months they are usually able to make themselves understood, even though it might take some effort on the parents behalf.

No. Both the scan and the blood test just give a higher or lower risk of Down's syndrome based on your age. For a diagnosis you will have to have an amniocentesis. You need to talk with your doctor, a counsellor and your partner to work out your next step.
