For a child, the costs can be between $10,000 a year to upwards over $100,000 a year for more medically complex kids. My son for example, is four years old, and cannot walk or talk and is mentally impaired. He does not require a breathing machine or feeding tube, and doesn't have a low immunity system, so he isn't in the hospital all the time. His main expenses come from antipsychotic medications to help with his behavior, specialty visits to geneticists, neurologists and rehabilitative centers. When we take him for private physical, occupational, and speech therapy, plus behavioral visits, the fees can be about $800 a month. We have good insurance too. His medications can run $200 a month. For children that are in the hospital a lot, bills can be too high to pay. So these parents often have their children enrolled in a medicaid program. This helps pay all the high medical bills and kids can often get on despite their parents income if the childs needs are exceptionally high.
