The Battle of Antietam was a battle during the Civil War. It was about 6 hours long with 23,000 casualties. About 7,000 of those died and the rest were wounded or missing.
The battle of Antietam was said to be the single-most bloodiest day of the war. Thousands of lives were lost at this battle, perhaps the most of any of the battles. This battle was a Union (North) defeat.

The conclusion reached at the end of the previous noted below is not accurate. France and England continued to supply the South with weapons, ships and loans. The Confederacy was a defacto nation. It had an army, a constitution and a territory that it controlled longer than anyone expected.

The Battle of Antietam was a battle fought during the US Civil War. It saw General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fighting against the Union Army of the Potomac commanded by Major General George B. McClellan.
It was Lee's first offensive into Union territory and his aim was to draw the Federal army into a fight, defeat it and perhaps drive on to Washington and thus end the war. Lee also had in mind that a Confederate victory in the north would convince the governments of England and France to officially recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation and lend aid to it. This was the idea expressed by the government at Richmond.
The battle was fought near Sharpsburg Maryland, September 17, 1862, and the result would not be in favor of the Confederates. McClellan and his army defeated Lee albeit by the narrowest of margins. It was just enough however for President Abraham Lincoln to bring forth his plan of emancipation for the slaves and the war took on a whole new meaning. It would no longer be a fight to preserve the United States as one nation, but a war to free slaves. Truly the basic issue had always been slavery or the abolition of it but now it became "official policy" to free the Southern slave as well. After that the rebel hope of European aid, including military help, vanished. The Confederacy would fight on alone and the best they could hope for was to outlast the Yankees and eventually sue for peace so they would indeed be a new country.

Antietam, or Sharpesburg, was fought on September 17th,1862. It was a battle that stopped Lee's first invasion of the north in Maryland. Part of Lee's army was detached on other duty, and a careless officer had lost a copy of his plans. This copy was found by the federals, and showed them the whereabouts of Lee's divided forces. The union commander, General George McClellan, moved to take advantage of his good fortune. The northern forces, although twice the numbers of the confederates, failed in a number of assaults to dislodge them from their positions. When in the evening, it looked like Lee's army was about to break, General A.P Hill arrived from Harper's Ferry with 3,000 men to break up the federal assault. Instead of retreating,Lee boldly held his lines, but the union troops did not renew the battle. Both armies had been mangled, with a total of 5,000 killed, and 18,000 wounded. It was the bloodiest single day of the war. It was considered a union victory, for it stopped Lee's invasion, but also called a tactical draw, because the badly outnumbered rebels handled the union forces thrown at them roughly, repelling at least twelve assaults. The next day Lee withdrew back into Virginia. Info from "The Civil War",by Bruce Catton.
