You should get a confirmation popup that advises you that you have deleted a picture when deleting on the S4. You can always look for the photo in your gallery and if it is gone then you probably deleted it.

Though, deleting pictures is possible, when you click on a picture, there will be a bar at the bottom with four icons (export, last picture, next picture, and delete in that order) just click the little trashcan and the picture will be deleted.
