When you say "used", what exactly are you looking for? Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory, sort of a souped-up ibuprofen. So if you're looking for control of the pain of the cold-sore, it may help. But it's not going to help you with shortening the duration of the cold sore or the area that it spreads to. For that you need a prescription anti-viral, Zovirax (acyclovir), because cold sores are caused by the Herpes virus (HSV-1). Alternatively, you could get Abreva which is a non-prescription ointment that will also shorten the cold sore's lifespan. Other over-the-counter cold sore medicines just focus on keeping it dry and/or numbing the area, but won't affect healing time.
