But it's not going to help you with shortening the duration of the cold sore or the area that it spreads to. For that you need a prescription anti-viral, Zovirax (acyclovir), because cold sores are caused by the Herpes virus (HSV-1). Alternatively, you could get Abreva which is a non-prescription ointment that will also shorten the cold sore's lifespan. Other over-the-counter cold sore medicines just focus on keeping it dry and/or numbing the area, but won't affect healing time.
