Can Epsom salt be used in euthanasia of animals?

[Edit]

Euthanasia of animals is no longer a free available option, laws against animal cruelty and abuse might be applied to anyone who kills an animal without verifiable grounds. Even in the case of a justified euthanasia, this must be carried out in the most humane way possible and by a professional veterinarian if available.

Epsom salts were used in the past and not always with success and its use was discontinued as a cruel method. Out of welfare reasons, it should not be used for the euthanasia of an animal.

There are many safe and modern pharmaceutical products available for use by veterinarians only, which, if being administered, will cause death of the animal in a painless way.

When mercy is not the reason (as in the case of terminal illness), animals must also get the chance to an alternative, through relocation , adoption or other , animal welfare organizations may help with advice and resources.
