The actual infection is of the bed of the nail and of the plate under the surface of the nail
Nail plate
Splinter hemorraghe is caused by voids in the nail cell production which fill up with blood from the nail bed. They do not run the entire length of the nail plate, but will grow forward with the nail plate until they grow off with the free edge. Melanonychia are vertical pigmented bands, often described as nail 'moles', which usually form in the nail matrix. Seek a physicians care should you suddenly see this change in the nail plate. It could signify a malignant melanoma or lesion. Dark streaks may be a normal occurrence in dark-skinned individuals, and are fairly common.
The nail plate is composed of keratin.
Nail Plate: The hard surface of the nail that you can see. Nail Bed: All of the soft tissue beneath the nail. Lanula: The half moon at the base of the nail. While some are hidden, they are usually visible on the thumb. Did you know that it is thought that the lanula is actually a reflection of light. Matrix: This area is located beneath the cuticle. This is where all the growth of the nail takes place. The area contains nerves and blood vessels to nourish the new nail. Cuticle: The skin that overlaps the nail plate is called the cuticle. Allowing the skin to dry out is the reason for the development of hangnails. Nail Folds: The skin that surrounds and supports the nail on three sides, holding it in place. Nail fungus infections often occur in this area.
The nail plate is produced by living skin cells ( specialized epithelial cells)
The nail part refers to the the visible part of nails on fingers and toes while the nail bed refers to the skin beneath the nail plate.

The skin around the base of the nail plate is called the cuticle. When the cuticle is removed, bacteria and other infection can get to your nail without the nail being protected by the cuticle.
