When You Are 13 Or Younger . . .

You can deliver newspapers.

You can work as a baby-sitter.

You can work as an actor or performer in motion pictures, television, theater or radio.

You can work in a business solely owned or operated by your parents.

You can work on a farm owned or operated by your parents.

However, parents are prohibited from employing their children in manufacturing, mining, or any other occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

When You Turn 14 . . .

You generally may not work in:

As long as you have decent grades, I'm pretty sure you can get a work permit. You would have to go to your high school career center, or if you're in 8th grade, go to the high school in your district. I had a job in California when I was 14, but by law I could only work 3 hours a day on school nights, and on the weekends and during summer up to 8 hours, no later than 7:00 PM. It might differ in different areas, though. Just make sure it's okay with your parents and that you can still manage to keep your grades up while you have a job. Also, make sure you are polite and friendly when you go in for an interview or application, ALWAYS SMILE, and be friendly to the boss, just as you would be to any other person at the job. Trust me, my dad was my boss, so I know these things! Good Luck! Yeah, but good luck trying to find someone to hire you. I'm sixteen and I'm having issues myself. If you live in California you've probably seen those people who hold signs outside of stores. They'll hire anyone and they often pay about $10 an hour. I had a friend who did that at 14. Try that?

Most places require you to be at least 14 to get a work permit and to have a job. Kids are allowed to work in family businesses and farms. And even then the types of jobs and hours are restricted. You will have to check the laws for your state.
