Canon lenses are similarly divided into two classes: EF-S lenses, and EF / L lenses. L lenses (a subset of EF lenses) are indicated by a red band around the front of the lens, and are the highest quality Canon lenses.
A 35mm Canon prime lens is an EF lens. It will work on any Canon digital camera.
All Canon lenses work on all Canon cameras, with the exception that Canon EF-S lenses only work on Canon digital cameras with APS-C sensors (Rebel, 30D/40D/50D), because the lens is too small to cover the full frame of larger cameras (5d, 5d Mark II, 1D Mark II, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark III, etc.).

Canon EF lenses were introduced in 1987 for Canon's new EOS auto-focus cameras. All EF lenses fit all EOS film and digital cameras.
Some Canon DSLR cameras, such as the digital Rebels, have an APS-size (smaller) sensor. These cameras can use EF lenses with full automation, and can also use the EF-S lenses designed especially for them. The advantage of EF-S lenses is that they are more compact than EF lenses. The EF-S lenses will only work on some Canon DSLR bodies, so compatibility should be determined before purchasing an EF-S lens.

If it is an autofocus lens then it will fit on current Canon bodies, assuming it is a Canon mount lens. For older lenses they may work with an adaptor but some metering functions may be lost.
Why is a 50 mm lens 0n a 35 mm film camera not the same as a 50mm lens on a digital camera?
most sensors on digitals are much smaller than 35mm film frames, so the lens of 50mm acts lika a telephoto one.
