Federal law prevents felons from possessing a firearm. Unless you apply with the ATF and have your civil rights restored (not likely with domestic violence, firearm or any other violent crime), you cannot possess a firearm under a disability (disability = felony) However, felons are allowed to possess black powder arms (100% muzzleloaders, flintlocks). These are not considered firearms, and you can purchase them without a background check. Dual purpose muzzleloaders are subject to background checks, because they can be converted to a firearm. * Federal Laws pertaining to felons possessing weapons only applies if the person were convicted of a federal felony. In all other cases state statutes and the terms of the convicted person's release, probation or sentencing guidelines apply.
Crossbows are not specifically mentioned in the Ohio arms statutes as being prohibited to convicted felons, however IFthe state bans possession of "deadly" weapons to felons, crossbows could fall into this category. You would be wise to simply call the state Fish & Game Commission and ask them yourself.

This is what I was told by a federal game warden it is not illegal for a felon to hunt with a black powder gun or a standard bow. A crossbow is illegal. A crossbow, shotgun, rifle, or any handgun it is illegal for a felon to possess.
As a nebraska resident I called game and parks. The interpretaion of nebraska law regarding this varies from county attorney to county attorney. Call the county attorney of residence first to see if you can own one and then the county you are going to hunt in. For example in ottoe county it is permissable to own and hunt with a bow.
A cross bow may not be allowed by the state for anyone. You are probably on safer ground with a bow and arrow. Check in with the caseworker before getting involved in either.
