Can a hamster and a gerbil share a cage?

[Edit]

Answer

I would strongly advise against it. Gerbils are colonial animals and do best when living in groups. They are normally gentle and sociable. Hamsters on the other hand are very solitary and have a tendency to attack other animals when kept together, although they do make excellent pets when properly cared for.
