No, not without the proper preparations. The advice is the same for either a mother or father traveling alone with a child. If you are traveling alone with your child you should be aware that concerns about parental abductions has made border officials more vigilant when they find a child traveling alone with one parent. You should be prepared to produce documentation such as a letter of authorization or travel consent signed by the other parent. In some countries you may not be asked for it. In others, you will be detained until your authorization can be reviewed by officials. The child may even be questioned about the other parent. You should also note that you may have trouble re-entering the country of origin. In the US a passport application requires the signatures, or a notarized permission letter, of both parents to take a minor child out of the country.

I think they can, but I'm pretty sure unless they have a restraining order or command to stay in that country, they can ask the government for permission to leave the country.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!! With joint custody, both parents have rights and your son needs to find an attorney to make sure she doesnt move the child out of country.

Generally the custodial parent needs the permission of the court to move out of state/country. The consent of the other parent will make the process easier.

You may since sole custody implies the child lives with that parent 100% of the time. With joint custody the child may dwell with the other parent for part of the time or with one parent all of the time with visitations for the other parent. It depends on the details and the state child support guidelines.

If you have joint custody can your teenager live with either parent?

The guidelines are basically the same in every state but obviously there are a few minor differences. Joint custody consists of Primary Custody & Secondary Custody. The parent with primary custody is who the child lives with & the other parent has secondary custody. Depending on the age of the child & the state in which they reside, the court may let them determine where they choose to live. Or if both parents agree on the child's decision then the child can live with either parent.
